Adolescents

I work with adolescents in a developmentally appropriate way that meets them where they are. I use a blend of individual talk therapy and activity therapy to help adolescents tackle any of the concerns mentioned above as well as issues that are specific to their stage of life.

Play Therapy

Children use play in the same way adults use their words in counseling. They process their feelings and make sense of their experiences through play. Play therapists are trained to understand a child’s play and to guide them toward coping with difficult emotions as well as to help them problem solve solutions to their distress. Play offers children a medium to work through experiences that may be too difficult to talk about. In play therapy children develop a better understanding of what they are feeling, learn how to trust and value themselves, gain better self-control, and learn appropriate ways of relating to and communicating to others.

The Association for Play Therapy (APT), an international organization, released this video to explain how play therapy works.

Family Therapy

Relationships are an essential part of being human. We desire connection to other people, and the place we experience that the most is inside our own families. Relationships can be complicated, though, and family systems can struggle at times. I often use family therapy mixed together with individual therapy to help family members uncover patterns that may need to be shifted in order for more fulfilling connection.

Parent Consultation

I offer parent consultation sessions both separately as well as a part of a child’s play therapy treatment. If your child is in play therapy, I will meet with you for parent consultation sessions every 3-5 sessions. During that time we discuss what I think your child may be experiencing based on his/her play sessions as well as discuss strategies for you to implement at home.

I also work with parents alone (without your child in therapy) if you are looking for tips and information about how best to relate to and understand your children. These sessions focus more on child development, what is going on in your child’s brain and ways to implement strategies based on your own personality and parenting philosophy.

Couples Therapy

A romantic relationship is typically an intimate and emotionally vulnerable relationship filled with love. At times, couples feel like they have lost the connection they once had or that, over time, they have built up a lot of hurt or distance between partners. I use Emotionally Focused Couples therapy to help couples identify what led to the disconnection, to understand the negative patterns in their relationship, to heal from past wounds, and to find a new way of feeling close and connected again.
